Why Fertility Awareness Matters

June marks World Infertility Awareness Month, a time to shed light on an issue that affects millions globally. According to the WHO, up to 1 in 6 couples of reproductive age will experience infertility yet it remains a topic too often left unspoken.

Dr. Goswamy’s Message to Young Cancer Patients

This year, Dr. Rajat Goswamy, Founder and Medical Director of Harley Street Fertility Centre, is calling for urgent awareness:

“Young people facing cancer deserve to know how treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy can affect their fertility before treatment begins.”

In Mauritius, cancer is on the rise, with 476 young patients (aged 15–49) diagnosed in 2023. Many are never told that fertility preservation is possible.

What Is Fertility Preservation?

Dr. Goswamy highlights vitrification - the freezing of eggs, sperm, or embryos before cancer treatment as a trusted solution. This allows patients the option of building a family later, through IVF.

Success rates vary with age, but early action gives the best chance.

Final Word

Cancer treatment can save lives. But it shouldn’t silence the future dream of parenthood.
Let’s make fertility part of the conversation - because your fertility matters.
